In
1978, God Incarnate Baba Lokenath appeared in a vision to Swami Shuddhanandaa,
directing him to spread His message of love, compassion, and trust in
the divine. Baba left for the Himalayas in 1982 as a wandering monk. When
he came to the holy pilgrim center of Bageshwar, he established a retreat
there in the mountains. Between 1985-87, Baba traveled India visiting
various sacred pilgrimage sites. Then he came to Kolkatta, where he began
his humanitarian Mission. During those year s
of travel, Baba began sharing the wisdom of the ancient Rishis. In 1990,
the Centenary year of Baba Lokenath's Mahasamadhi, he came to the West
for the first time.
Since his first discourses at an Indian Temple and a Unitarian Church
in San Francisco, he has become the beloved Baba of young and old, men
and women belonging to all communities and faiths. In 1993, he spoke on
Spiritual Oneness at the Parliament of World Religions in Chicago, and
gave the keynote address to more than 10,000 young people at the World
Vision 2000 Conference in Washington D.C. Baba has spoken at many universities
in the U.S., including MIT, Stanford, California, Virginia State University,
Notre Dame, and Georgia Tech. Baba has a special mission with the young,
whom he inspires to embrace eternal values while living in a rapidly changing
society.
He was the first Hindu to give a Sunday Service at a 400 year-old Catholic
Church in Remcheid, Germany, where he spoke on Jesus and applying His
teachings to daily life. In the same city, he addressed hundreds of high
school students for three years in a row. Large numbers of Germans await
his visit to different cities and attend his meditation workshops every
year. The local press gives wide coverage year after year. He also visits
the U.K., Singapore, Australia and many other countries. In all these
places, his gentle spirit touches one and all. His message is non-sectarian
and universal. He celebrates the divine in all its manifestations, in
every life, in every faith. Baba's profound wisdom, his childlike surrender
and trust in God, are profoundly moving, living realities to all who meet
him.
As a living embodiment of pure bliss, absolute humility, divine compassion,
and unconditional love, he speaks directly to the heart in ways that transcend
language. His teachings, as seen in those on cultivating your own mind
as your best friend, offer a doorway into a grounded, practical spirituality
for our time. In the midst of his creative and relentless service to the
poorest of the poor in West Bengal, he works just as tirelessly to give
those in the West the practical means to transcend superficiality and
to break the shackles of the mind caught in illusion. He tenderly bridges
East and West, calling all to a life of compassion and love, harmony and
peace, trust and celebration, both in the divine and in day-to-day life.
